The isfdb name template message is usually placed in the External links or References section of a speculative fiction author or artist's Wikipedia article to link it to that person's bibliography on the Internet Speculative Fiction Database (ISFDB). The tag is intended to inform people that a detailed author bibliography is available on ISFDB as a support reference for the article.

If an author or artist's name on Wikipedia exactly matches the name used on ISFDB then add {{isfdb name}} to the References or External links section for the author or artist. If the Wikipedia article is on a disambiguated page such as John Brunner (novelist) or you wish to link to a pseudonym used by the author then use the template with the id and name parameters; {{isfdb name|id=John_Brunner|name=John Brunner}}.

The following examples assume you are adding the template to the Isaac Asimov article.

Link where the author's name exactly matches the name used on ISFDB

* {{isfdb name}}

displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Isaac_Asimov

Please be aware that if you use the {{isfdb name}} form of the link and the article is later moved, usually for disambiguation, that the link will break. Thus, while it is convenient, it should not be used unless the odds are low that the author or artist's page will be moved.

Override just the link to the bibliography on ISFDB. This would most often be used on author disambiguation pages or where for some reason there's a slight difference in the formatting or spelling of an author's name between Wikipedia and the ISFDB. For example, from John Brunner (novelist) disambiguated article you can use

* {{isfdb name|John_Brunner}}

which displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?John_Brunner

Override both the display name and link such to link to the bibliography for an author's pseudonym

* {{isfdb name|id=George_E._Dale|name=George E. Dale}}

displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?George_E._Dale

  • {{Isfdb title}} to link to an ISFDB title record for a novel or story.
  • {{Isfdb series}} to link to a series bibliography on ISFDB.
