The default value (returned when the first parameter is not recognised) is background:

The return values are complete color values to be used as a CSS style, including the # but not the ; character.

Alternative: simple template {{element color|...}}

All colors are also available via the simple template {{element color|...}}. That is, enter the nam as a parameter to the template:

• {{element color|alkali metal}} → #ff6666.

The outcome (color id) is the same. The template is a bit more lax for the input (any capitalisation accepted, also singular accepted).

Deprecated or unknown meaning

Do not use these color names. In general, it is advised to use a more specific, meaningfull color name. These color names are not used in main space, and most are redirected to an other color.

This is an 18-column periodic table layout, which has come to be referred to as the common or standard form, on account of its popularity. It is also sometimes referred to as the long form, in comparison to the short form or Mendeleev-style, which omits groups 3–12 by placing their elements into the main groups. The wide periodic table incorporates the lanthanides and the actinides, rather than separating them from the main body of the table in order to save space. The extended periodic table adds the 8th and 9th periods, including the superactinides.
